This is our full monty Western Bays expedition, a good level of fitness is recommended for this trip to enjoy paddling for multiple days in a row but you do not need an experienced or super fit paddler. This is the best way to see the Great Lake Taupo most people miss, we leave from the village of Kinloch and don’t see road access to the Lakes edge again until we pass Te Hapa Bay only 4kms from our trip end point of Kuratau.

Along the way we pass the Taupo rocking climbing meccas of Kawakawa Bay and Whanganui Bay; remote boated access only holiday settlements and Marae’s. We visit the Tieke falls via a 3km paddle up the Waihaha stream and pass the legendry Karangahape cliffs. You will see signs of the cataclysmic origins that shaped Lake Taupo.

We have a wide range of camp sites available to us from DOC serviced with toilets at Kawakawa bay, Waihora Bay and Te Hapua; to the beautiful natural harbour of locally serviced Boat Harbour; to more remote un-serviced camping sites shores as Cherry Bay. For this reason no two trips will be the same and you have the opportunity to have a lot of input as to what you get out of your trip.

You will then be transported to Kinloch; from here your kayak guide will equip you for your kayak journey and give you a short safety brief. Then you are ready to head out on your Western Bay expedition, you will enjoy fantastically scenic paddling to your first campsite. Here we will set up tents and get settled in, leaving time for exploring, swimming, or just relaxing and letting the stresses of the world fade away.

Each day you and your guide will decide on visiting points, lunch breaks and campsites for your day; or let the guide plan it all for you, taking you to the best bits. This trip can be as relaxed or as adventurous as you choose to make it. We will be met at the end of our trip in Kuratau and taken back to our base at Acacia Bay.
