The 77, 348 hectare Kaimanawa Forest Park is made up of four mountain ranges with a number of large river systems which travel through the valleys of these monumental mountains. The ranges are composed of uplifted fractured greywacke formed 300 – 145 million years ago. Volcanic material from numerous Taupō eruptions have coated some of the mountainous terrain and make up the base of most of the park’s soils. This soil has been a perfect for establishing a variety of beech tree, rimu, miro and matai trees which are rich in native bird life. This feat millions of years in the making has created a stunning landscape for those seeking a truly spectacular adventure.

For our epic 3-day adventure we offer a unique experience where we will traverse a range of different terrains, from the high alpines of Umukarikari and Mt Urchin, to the clear fresh waters of the Waipakihi River. Throughout our journey you will be surrounded by a unique scheduled landscape of mountains, lush native forest, and beautiful river valleys. In the morning you will be greeted by the sounds of various native birds like the kererū (NZ pigeon), fantail (pīwakawaka), bellbird (korimako), rifleman (tītipounamu), North Island robin (toutouwai) and grey warbler (riroriro). At night enjoy the sounds of morepork perched in the trees and listen carefully for the infamous kiwi. Many other rare varieties of birds like the kākā can also be found here but you’ll have to come see for yourself.
